Have you played the Lottery? Well that's basically the idea for how room selection occurs at SF Urban. Prior to your arrival, students names are drawn out and given a number for selection. We notify you what number you have received and you then pick your room in that order.
At 1 PM on Move-In Day, the student with #1 gets to roam throughout the House and pick whatever room he/she would like. Students are given 5-7 minutes to make their selections. Then #2 gets to pick, and so on.
Some students come with roommates in mind already, Yet many others have not selected a roommate, and those who have favorable lottery numbers will often send out an email, letting fellow Urbanites know that they could help choose a room early, should they agree to be a roommate. We will supply all of you with a complete list of your semester's students, along with their emails, about 2-3 weeks from your arrival.
Students not in process of selecting a room may also walk through the house prior to their turn in order to learn more about what each room offers. We have eleven rooms to choose from, with a maximum capacity of 2-3 per room and 26 in the house. Three rooms (plus the Resident Assistant's room) are on the 3rd floor, Six are on the 2nd floor and two are in the basement. Each room has unique touches, many are reminiscent of the house's 1898 Victorian heritage. Four rooms have claw-foot tubs, one has a sunken bathtub, another has a 'split bath' (toilet room separate from shower room) and some are equipped with stall showers. Several rooms have a large array of windows for maximum light and some have a view of The Panhandle of Golden Gate Park across Fell Street.
Each room is uniquely color-coordinated with Victorian colors and woodwork styles. Each student receives a bunk-able bed, desk, chair and dresser. Some rooms are equipped with armoires in addition to small closets. Each room has it's own bathroom.
Who will pick #1? Only time, and the luck of the lottery will tell.
